Last Friday, the children of Kilkishen N.S. saw the return of the Buddy Reading Programme in the school. At 10.15am, the children of Junior & Senior Infants 'buddied-up' with the children of 5th & 6th class. Likewise, the 1st & 2nd class children joined the children in 3rd & 4th class for some shared reading. 'Reading Buddies' is a programme in which two or more children read together. Older pupils read with younger pupils - this allows the older students the opportunity to develop fluency as well as a sense of pride in their reading accomplishments. Reading to a younger child can help to develop an older child's love of reading and develop in them a greater motivation to read, while building their confidence and self-esteem. The younger children also had an opportunity to read for their Buddies - practising their reading skills at their own level. The children loved the time they spent together - in addition to the great benefits the programme has in terms of literacy in the school, the children also benefitted from the chance to get to know some of the older/younger children - building friendships and enhancing the climate of care and kindness which we enjoy in Kilkishen N.S. We are already looking forward to next Friday's Buddy Reading time!! Comments are closed.
