Congratulations to our group of "Pupils of the Week" for the week past. Well done to all pupils that were in the running for selection this week and remember to be in with a chance Try Your Best, Show Respect and Complete Your Homework. Best of luck everyone next week! Have a sneak peak below at our day of recording with Michael O'Brien. We performed a Water Wastage Drama The Water Squad Saves The Day, we recorded our Presentation Pitch for our campaign and we also recorded a Water Mannequin Challenge. The whole school watched the videos yesterday and we LOVE them. We presented Michael with a gift to thank him for his fantastic work. We really appreciate it. and we will upload the videos to this website very soon. They will also be available to view on the community website. As part of our campaign, we also set up a stall in Gleeson's Shop on Tuesday 7th March. Our aim was to educate shoppers about Product Water Footprints. We surveyed some of the customers, handed out information leaflets and did a short presentation. We also made bookmarks and gave these out. Colouring pages were given to any young children who visited our stall. We were thrilled to receive very generous donations which came to a total of €72.50. Our advice is to drink water, eat more whole, unprocessed foods and to buy locally. This week, our Thursday Station Teaching consisted of fun activities and games based on Fractions.
Thank you to Mr. Littleton, Miss O'Shea, Pauline and Caroline who joined us to help out, enabling us to have five different stations. The children played Fractions Balloon Pop on the IWB and this involved popping the balloons in order from the smallest fraction to the largest fraction. They also played Fraction War. In this game, students compared their fraction cards. The player with the highest fraction got to keep his/her card and that of his/her opponent’s. The aim of the game is to see who collects the most fractions. The next game was Shake It. The children had to shake coloured counters out onto the table and represent each colour as a fraction of the whole number. The children did Fraction Worksheets at one of the stations where they had to find the fraction of a number. The final station was Fraction Fun. Children made fractions using playing cards. They compared their fractions with that of their partners and discussed which was higher/lower. They tried to make the biggest/smallest fraction that they possibly could using their cards and as an extension activity with 4th class, we formed equivalent fractions. As the deadline for the One Good Idea is tomorrow, we now have all the evidence of our hard work sent off in the post! We are extremely proud of the work that we have done and we hope that we have successfully spread our message that SAVING WATER SAVES ENERGY!! Have a look at the PowerPoint presentations that we designed as part of our project below. And don't forget to keep an eye on the website as we will be uploading our films very soon.....

Congratulations to our group of "Pupils of the Week" for the week past. Well done to all pupils that were in the running for selection this week and remember to be in with a chance Try Your Best, Show Respect and Complete Your Homework. Best of luck everyone next week! This week pupils in 5th and 6th class were introduced to Mathletics, an online maths learning platform, that is used in schools all over the world. The programme is tailored to the Irish curriculum and is highly engaging and motivating for pupils. Pupils complete maths tasks based on topics taught in class and also work on mental maths in competition with students from around the world in "Live Mathletics." Mathletics will be used as part of our station teaching during Maths class until Easter. Seniors and First Class were investigating slopes with Mr. McNamara this week. They were investigating the effects of high and low slopes on the speed of their cars. Students in Seniors/1st brought in their favourite book to talk about it in front of the class for World Book Day.
Students introduced their books to the class by reading the title, some students read a page from their chosen book, some students read the blurb at the back of their book, others took us on a picture walk and summarised what happened in the story! Children discussed their favourite characters in their selected book and told us about their favourite part of the storybook also. We love books! The school lunchtime soccer league has turned into a huge success. The children love the idea of playing for their favorite team. Huge credit is due to the boys and girls of the active school committee for setting up the league and officiating the matches. They also kept record of each goal scored and as you can see Manchester City are currently on top of the league.
One Good IdeaThank you to Miss MacLean for designing this beautiful poster to promote our One Good Idea that Saving Water Saves Energy. She is exceptionally talented and we really appreciate how willingly she always helps everybody in the school. The children did a fantastic job of painting the poster and we hope that it helps to spread our message. The Water Squad would like to invite you to take this Water Quiz to see which water uses in your home are efficient and which aren't. This website will also offer simple conservation tips that save water and energy.
www.taptips.ie/water-usage-calculator.htm After a long selection process the children of the active school committee have decided on an active school motto for Kilkishen National School. The winning motto is very catchy ''THE NUMBER ONE RULE IS AN ACTIVE SCHOOL'' The committee would like to thank the students from junior infants to sixth class who participated in the process.
The students of Kilkishen N.S. start their day with activity to get their brains ready for learning. Every morning before the bell rings at 9.20 four students lead the rest of the school in doing different activities from their supertrooper journal. It has proved to be an enjoyable way for the children to get ready for a day of learning and fun.
