5th and 6th class visited Glór in Ennis on October 26 to attend a talk from Authors Caroline Busher and E.R. Murray. The talk aims to promote reading amongst this age group. The pupils were treated to some spooky Halloween stories and Halloween creature illustrations.
Children from Seniors/1st Class learned about the artist Vincent Van Gogh this month. They listened to Don McLean's song; 'Vincent' while painting their very own version of 'Starry Starry Night' on canvas using colourful acrylic paints and experimenting with pallet knives.
Congratulations to all pupils that received a Gold Star last week for doing their best, showing respect and completing their homework. Stars of the Week were chosen at random from each class. Well done everyone and best of luck again this week! The girls' Gaelic Football team represented themselves superbly in the semi-final against Kilnaboy N.S. in Lees Road today despite the wet conditions. Captain Ciara did well between the posts, Julie put in a solid performance sweeping up full back and alongside her Lily and Rachel fought hard to defend incoming ball. Azara and Emily worked hard in midfield supporting each other while Clara, Lola and Paula and Keelin worked together to earn scores for the team. On the remaining panel are Kara, Ella, Zara and Emma who have been football enthusiasts and are upcoming candidates for next year's starting team.
A huge team effort was made in order for Kilkishen to dominate most of the second half being three points up at one stage. Team play was highly evident and the girls grew in confidence as the game progressed. Goals scored by Lola and by Lily helped to keep spirits up. Even though the girls battled well, Kilnaboy recovered by scoring a goal to get themselves back into the game. Unfortunately, with five minutes left on the clock, we conceded another point to end our hopes of securing our spot in the final. The final score being 2-3 to 3-4. The Kilkishen girls tried hard, contested the ball with passion and pride and can hold their heads high after this great display and super achievement of competing closely in the semi-final. There are high hopes for Kilkishen's Gaelic Football future! Well done to all the girls and boys in Kilkishen N.S. who participated in training and encouraged each other throughout the Gaelic Football season. On Wednesday the boys and girls of 1st and 2nd class took a trip to visit the Clare Museum. The children listened to Halloween stories from Clare storyteller Ruth Marshall and also learned the origin of some Halloween games and songs. The children were really interested in learning about the story of Biddy Early. The children really enjoyed the trip.
Pupils in 5th and 6th class have been exploring paint and colour in a variety of lessons this term. Pupils have experimented using bright and dark colours creating Aztec Sun designs and Halloween silhouettes. Have a look at some of the pupils creations below. Congratulations to all pupils that received a Gold Star last week for doing their best, showing respect and completing their homework. Stars of the Week were chosen at random from each class. Well done everyone and best of luck again this week! In the coming weeks the Junior, Senior Infant & 1st class children will be commencing the Aistear Programme in school. The Aistear Programme was developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and is the curriculum framework for children from birth until 6 years. It provides information for adults to help them plan for and provide enjoyable and challenging learning experiences, so that all children can grow and develop as competent and confident learners. The Aistear programme focuses on the principles of early learning and development and how children learn and develop : holistic learning and development, active learning, play and hands-on experiences, relevant and meaningful experiences, communication and language and the learning environment. Having received training in this programme and having studied it in some depth, we are certain that the children will benefit greatly from the implementation of the Aistear programme in our classrooms this year. Learning and developing through play is at the heart of the Aistear programme. The importance of the different types of play involved is explained in the Aistear handout attached – ie. physical play, games with rules, creative play, language play, pretend play etc. Each month, we will be following a particular theme for that month and our Aistear time in class will focus on that theme. For the remainder of this month our theme will be ‘The Doctor’s surgery’ – we will let you know each month of the Aistear theme we are following in school. We will keep you informed of how the programme is working – through our school website or Class Dojo we will keep you updated with our progress and of course there will be lots of photos to be seen! We expect the children to thoroughly enjoy their Aistear sessions in school and to learn LOTS while they ‘play’! The Junior, Senior and 1st class children were very lucky last week to have a visit from Nurse Sandra McNamara (Rían's Mum) who works in the ICU unit of the Limerick University Hospital. Sandra spoke to us about her job - how she became a nurse and what she does every day to care for sick people. We learned lots and lots about being a nurse and we also learned about how we can help ourselves to stay healthy and happy. We really enjoyed having Nurse Sandra in our school! The children in 3rd and 4th Class have been working on a very special Art Project since September, titled Under the Sea. They worked fantastically together and we are all delighted with the result. They made a giant fish using old CDs for the scales and their cut-out hand-prints for the fish tail and fin, they made an octopus from black card creating its tentacles by linking pieces of card together, Maisy made a diver and each child made their own jellyfish using paper bowls and crepe paper. Come and have a look at our display, we are very proud of it and it helps brighten up our classroom.
