Yesterday's Station Teaching combined three different subject areas. Mr. Walsh's 3rd Class joined Miss Fawl's classroom for some Problem-solving activities and 'brain trickery', a Religion exercise and a Science investigation. At two of the stations the children explored various word problems. They studied problem-solving and logic cards in groups and attempted to recognize and complete patterns or find mistakes and objects which didn't belong. They also worked together to solve word problems on the Interactive Whiteboard. Activities like this stimulate and challenge young minds and introduce and develop a wide range of problem-solving and logic strategies. At another station the children were treated to an amazing range of tricks that fool your brain! They were mystified by the illusions, wordplay and numbers that defy logic in this book 'Mind-bending Brain Trickery'. As part of our 'Grow in Love' Religion programme we had been discussing the people we pray for. Yesterday the children each made their own 'Five-Finger Prayer'. The 'Five-Finger Prayer' invites us to focus on our fingers as a reminder to pray for others. We also engaged in a Science lesson based on the Strand Unit 'Materials and Change'. In groups the children investigated what happens when different things (salt, sugar, sand, cooking oil, flour, coffee and washing powder) are mixed with water. They described their predictions and then we tested each material and recorded the results. We noted any changes that took place and we then discussed how mixtures could be separated.
