In the coming weeks the Junior, Senior Infant & 1st class children will be commencing the Aistear Programme in school. The Aistear Programme was developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and is the curriculum framework for children from birth until 6 years. It provides information for adults to help them plan for and provide enjoyable and challenging learning experiences, so that all children can grow and develop as competent and confident learners. The Aistear programme focuses on the principles of early learning and development and how children learn and develop : holistic learning and development, active learning, play and hands-on experiences, relevant and meaningful experiences, communication and language and the learning environment. Having received training in this programme and having studied it in some depth, we are certain that the children will benefit greatly from the implementation of the Aistear programme in our classrooms this year. Learning and developing through play is at the heart of the Aistear programme. The importance of the different types of play involved is explained in the Aistear handout attached – ie. physical play, games with rules, creative play, language play, pretend play etc. Each month, we will be following a particular theme for that month and our Aistear time in class will focus on that theme. For the remainder of this month our theme will be ‘The Doctor’s surgery’ – we will let you know each month of the Aistear theme we are following in school. We will keep you informed of how the programme is working – through our school website or Class Dojo we will keep you updated with our progress and of course there will be lots of photos to be seen! We expect the children to thoroughly enjoy their Aistear sessions in school and to learn LOTS while they ‘play’! Comments are closed.
