We were learning the rhyme ‘hot cross buns’ and we got to taste them too! Mmm! We learned that they are traditionally eaten on Good Friday.

We made handprint poems for Grandparents Day during Catholic Schools Week
Play Time at The Toy Shop
The children explored the stories  'Rosie's Walk' by Pat Hutchins and the Little Red Hen. The boys and girls created a story map using art materials to sequence the story. The class also learned about the life cycle of a hen and got to watch a video of a chick hatching! Wow!
The boys and girls are enjoying learning through the use of our new smartboard!
The children are enjoying DabbleDoo Music in the classroom. The class are exploring sounds using their voices and by playing instruments and are enjoying the composing process  in groups. Children have also been learning 'Hill and Gully Rider' folk song and have been listening and repsonding to other excerpts of music. What musical fun!

Halloween
The boys and girls in seniors and first class invited the other classes into our room to watch them perform Halloween songs and poems. Then we went on a Spooky Bog Walk around Kilkishen. We had lots of fun and we enjoyed GoNoodle and watching a Halloween movie with some treats!

SESE: autumn Leaves Hunt
The children learned the Poem 'Autumn Leaves' and went outside in search for the different coloured autumn leaves which had fallen on the ground.

Maths- Addition Wheels - Children did simple and quick addition exercises outside using chalk.
The boys and girls used their imagination to create summer flowers using recyclable items such as bottle tops, toilet roll holders and by using other materials such as pipe cleaners and beads. Take a look at the children's amazing creations!
The class learned how to sew cress seeds and kept a Cress Seed Diary to observe and record the growing process.

Children were learning to mix primary colours and paint circles like the Russian abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky.

We enjoy Play time! A big thank you to Kahlan’s mum for donating the dolls house and kitchen for us to play with! Kahlan tells us about her experience in hospital recently. She shows us some equipment that she used in the hospital and some work that she did. Well done kahlan for being so scholarly and brave!

The class we’re learning about 2D shapes and had fun making their very own 2D shaped Robots! They even got to name their robots with some very creative names! Thanks to Aisling McNamara for helping us create our robots!
Valentines Day Art
Pancake Tuesday - the boys and girls read the story of The Runaway Pancake. We learned all about shrove Tuesday and had a table quiz based on the information we had encountered.

Maths stations- we loved playing maths games and learning maths skills! Children played four in a row and used dice to compose addition and subtraction problems.Thanks to Ms. O’Shea for helping us with problem-solving during our station work.

January

Story-telling Fun! The boys and girls were each given a tricky word in which they would have to include in their sentence which would add to the creation of a funny story. 
Science Experiment- Investigating changes. The class carried out an experiment that tested whether or not different materials dissolved in water. 
Project Time! 
The First class were learning about the seven continents in their Feena's First Book of Facts Book and decided amongst their group to select a continent to do project work on. The boys and girls enthusiastically did research on laptops in school and at home and brought in photos, pictures,  books, maps and even a globe to help them complete their projects. The children cannot wait to present their projects as a group to the other classes in the school!
In between group work, children thoroughly enjoyed singing 'The 7 Continents' Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6DSMZ8b3LE )
We really enjoyed having Ms. Fawl's 3rd and 4th Class with us to present their interesting projects on Myths and Legends. They sure had us all engaged with their stories and pictures and even some leprechaun dancing!

Children were learning about the journey of bread. Then, the class listened to the story of 'The Little Red Hen' and retold the story in the sequence establishing the beginning, middle and end.

Thanks to Ms. Woulfe for her help with our maths stations. The class participated in various station work activities which involved exploring money, dice addition games and maths games on the Interactive White Board.
Welcome to our classroom ‘siopa’ ! We are learning how to add up the cost of items that we want to buy in the shop.
​As shopkeepers, we are learning how to give back the correct change to the customer after they have bought their chosen item. We love to shop!

December

Seniors and First have been busy preparing for Christmas!
The boys and girls learned about Advent and Christmas around the world. 
They learned how to decorate our class Christmas tree and write the steps of how to do that.
The boys and girls learned how to 'Elf themselves'. 
The class made mono prints of Christmas decorations, painted the school windows making them festive and wrote Christmas cards.
We did Christmas yoga with Jamie from Cosmic kids online which was so much fun!
They were also very busy singing and dancing and  practicing for their Christmas plays! 
A big thanks to Ms. Fawl and 3rd and 4th Class for inviting us to their Science Exhibition! We had lots of fun learning about the different science experiments on display inside and outside Ms. Fawl's classroom.

November

The class enjoyed playing their new board games.
procedural writing: children had the pleasure of learning step by step how to make teacher a nice hot cup of tea! 😁👍🏼☕️
Maths stations-Thanks to Ms. Fitzgerald and Ms. Shaloo for their help during station work. Children were learning about number and measures.
The children enjoyed science week exploring the different forces. Kahlan also performed her very own lava lamp experiment for us! We also explored the forces push and pull in great detail and did some art which links to the push force. Children first drew Wellingtons. Then, they blew blue paint across the page using a straw. Their puddles came to life with this splashing effect. “When life gives you rain, jump in the puddles!”
We read the story ‘Elmer in the Snow’ and did some fabric and fiber art making mosaic-style Elmer’s and used paint and color to make the background to portray Elmer in the Snow.

Happy Halloween! 
The children dressed up for the Halloween Parade at School. They also got to carve out a pumpkin!

Handwriting Stations: Children practice letter formation by back-tracing, air tracing, palm tracing, desk tracing before practising their letters and words by tracing their fingers in the salt trays, writing using chalk and mini chalk boards, writing using mini whiteboards and markers and by using markers to write on lined laminated sheets.

Play time at 'The Estate Agents'
Mental Maths- Children from seniors and first class were competing in the Maths Wheel race! There was great excitement! The children enjoyed this mental maths game and their addition and subtraction skills are certainly improving with great speed!
P.E. - Outdoor and Adventure 
Science: Investigating Static Electricity
Science Experiment - Heating and Cooling - The children were involved in the investigation of heating and cooling. By pouring boiling water in a bowl, the children put in chocolate pieces into a bigger bowl and put that on top of the bioling water and observed the chocolate melting. Then the boys and girls began to spread the melted chocolate over a plain biscuit, decorated it with smarties and marshmallows and waited for the chocolate to cool down before they finally got the chance to eat their own creation! YUM!
The children were studying the artist Claude Monet and created their very own 'Bridge over Water Lilies' using a stencil and painting using their fingers.

Easter Art- The cross on the Hill using chalk pastels
Spring is in the air! The class were examining the plant for science and drawing and labelling the plant. The children were also sowing their very own tomato seeds which they brought home to take care of over the Easter holidays and to watch them grow! In art class, the children were drawing tulips and daffodils from observation and then painted their drawings.

First class looked at patterns for maths. For History, they were learning about games of the past and games today, the similarities and differences. They were lucky to get golden time to learn how to play some modern board games! :0

Recount Writing:
Children worked in groups to organise the recount example text in order  noting the introduction, middle and conclusion of the recount.
Children completed a planning template for writing 'My News' and then used that to write and draw their news about their weekend. 
Seniors and First Class Children are aware of the rules of crossing the road and made posters to make the whole school aware of Road Safety Week 2016. 
"
Stop, Look, Listen, Think, Live" became a class motto for road safety. 
The class performed the 
Safe Cross Code song and dance which is available on the Irish Road Safety Authority website (www.rsa.ie). 
The class were also involved in making 
drama- 'freeze frames/still images' of different road safety scenarios  which were created in groups  and children learned how to 'thought-track' the frame/image.

Recount Writing: My Summer Holidays

Literacy Stations
Seniors and 1st are busy bees working in groups playing various literacy games such as Tricky Words Bingo, Treasure Hunt using Reader words, Making CVC words in many different ways-play dough, magnetic letters, writing CVC sentences using whiteboard and markers, matching rhyming pairs, matching picture to word. The class are also developing their oral language skills and descriptive vocabulary when playing the game  'Headbandz'.

Handwriting Stations

Seniors and First Class were practising the letter formation of 'c' and 'o' this week in many different ways; tracing letters in sand trays, writing using whiteboards and markers and chalk boards and chalk, making the letters using play dough and making rainbow letters using different coloured crayons and highlighters.
