Clare County Development Plan
Overall Class Vision for Kilkishen in 2028
This year, Clare County Council invited students to have their say about their local area as part of their Development Plan. Each child in 4th and 5th Class completed a workbook about the Kilkishen area. They shared their thoughts and opinions about where they live and discussed future changes they would like to see. All the children then voted to create one overall class vision for their local area in 2028. They proposed building a new indoor swimming pool with a small cafe and a gaming room upstairs. Budding artist, Amy, drew the final plan which can be seen here.
Well done everybody! We hope the County Council like our idea.

Advertising
Every month during the Drama lesson we play fun and fast-paced games, we explore a theme and we learn a new dramatic strategy. This month we played Word Tennis, similar to Word Association. We developed our understanding of story-telling through discussion, by listening to each other tell stories and by watching a video. Our theme for this month, was Advertising. We discussed various techniques used in advertising, our favourite adverts, what adverts do and who's responsible for the message in adverts. The children then worked together in small groups, to invent a completely new television commercial. They performed these for the rest of the class and also for the Infant Classroom. They went down a storm! The children showed their creativity and they also used some of the techniques we had learned about. Videos of their performances can be seen on Class Dojo.
Trinity Bracelets
To depict the three-in-one concept of the Holy Trinity (One God: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit), the children made Trinity Bracelets during the RE class. Using three different colours of wool they plaited the strands to make beautiful bracelets. These bracelets can also be used as Friendship bracelets and as a sign of their friendship, the children made bracelets for every child in Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class.
Listening Skills
To demonstrate their listening skills the children engaged in Origami and carried out instructions to make paper boats, cars, sumo wrestlers and reindeer.
Ireland
We have been learning the counties of Ireland this month. Lilly brought in this beautiful Wooden Map of Ireland Jigsaw, which helped the children learn where each county is. We also used an Interactive Map on the IWB to practice and today the children received a blank map to test their knowledge.

The children in 3rd and 4th Class have been working on a very special Art Project since September, entitled
Under the Sea.
They worked fantastically together and we are all delighted with the result. They made a giant fish using old CDs for the scales and their cut-out hand-prints for the fish tail and fin, they made an octopus from black card creating its tentacles by linking pieces of card together, Maisy made a diver and each child made their own jellyfish using paper bowls and crepe paper. Come and have a look at our display, we are very proud of it and it helps brighten up our classroom.

Maths Stations
Mr. Walsh's 3rd Class joined us again for our Maths Stations yesterday. It was hugely successful and the children now move smoothly from one station to the next. They were focused and gained a lot from each activity. The topics covered this week were Number and Time. This week's stations were as follows:
- I conducted timed tables tests. The children were given 30 seconds each time to complete as many addition, subtraction, multiplication and division sums as they possibly could.
- Miss O'Shea did a Calculator Crossword Puzzle with the children. The puzzle is one designed by Alice Oglesby where the clues are all arithmetic sums. Once you work out each sum on the calculator, you then turn your calculator upside down and each number becomes a letter which spells out the word.
- Miss Clancy used a Target Board to challenge the children with various tasks e.g. Add 20 to all the numbers/How many odd numbers can you see?/etc
- Pauline and Caroline led the children in Interactive Time games on the IWB. The children had to match digital and analogue times and they also had to select the correct time from a list given.
- Miss Fitzgerald played a variety of Calculator Games including Secret Number, Bust and Beat the Calculator.
Hurling Skills with John Condon
The children were enjoying the beautiful sunshine and getting active yesterday. We are delighted to have John Condon back doing hurling skills training with us again. Today's lesson involved jumping, running, throwing and catching.

Silhouette Colour Burst Paintings
In Friday's Art lesson the children experimented with a variety of colours. They first painted the silhouette of any character/thing they wanted and they then expressed an 'explosion' of colour in many different ways. Some children mixed paint, others tried out different brush strokes or different tools, some even used their fingers.
LengthThe children are learning about Length in Maths this week. They were exploring standard and non-standard units of measurement. Here are some pictures of the children having fun using non-standard units of measurement to measure the length of our classroom.

Headbomz
We have been learning the Headbomz song in class this week. Headbomz is a brain-poppingly fun way to remind children that talking can help when you have a concern or worry. The great news is that your head won’t actually explode if you have a worry or concern and don’t talk about it! This is just a fun way to describe the indescribable; the things that might make children feel like their head is going to burst. The questions, thoughts, worries or feelings that they don’t quite know how to deal with or talk about. By describing these as Headbomz, we can start more conversations about how to get rid of them.
Headbomz is a new initiative from ISPCC Childline, supported by the Vodafone Ireland Foundation. It is aimed at children aged eight to ten years-old, usually children in second to fourth class, to encourage them to talk about their feelings. You can view the Headbomz video by following this link www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYMo3vkk0Ag |

Active Flag
On Wednesday, our school was assessed for the Active School Flag. The children in 3rd and 4th Class got active with Wake Up Shake Up, Go Noodle and 10 at 10 in the morning. They set up obstacle courses at break time and some of the children even participated in after-school hurling and camogie training. What an active bunch indeed! The judges were extremely impressed with how active pupils in Kilkishen NS are and we are keeping our fingers crossed that we have done enough to earn an Active Flag. A huge thank you is owed to Mr. Walsh for taking on this fantastic initiative and for leading us and encouraging us.

We are all unique members of our classroom, of our families, of our communities, of our country and of the world!
Under the Hawthorn Tree
The children absolutely loved the novel I read to them this month about famine times in Ireland. This novel is part of The Children of the Famine trilogy and we are looking forward to reading Wildflower Girl next.
Maths Stations 26/1/2017
This week 3rd Class were focusing on Problem-solving and 4th Class were learning about symmetry. For our Station Teaching on Thursday we had a mixture of both topics. The children had fun solving different problems on the Interactive White Board, they tried to work out some Sudoku puzzles , they drew the other side of a symmetrical picture and coloured it, they folded shapes to find their lines of symmetry and they revisited our Maths Language box. Again a big thank you to Miss O'Shea, Caroline and Pauline, as without them this activity wouldn't work.

Halloween
The children were working in groups earlier this week, learning about the traditions of Halloween and sharing what they learned with the class. Their work cards included information on Bonfires, Samhain, All Souls' Day, All Saints' Day, Tricks and Games, Costumes and Trick or Treating. While engaged in this lesson, the children were visited by the Cigire, Seán O'Cathallain and they were fantastically well behaved. Seán commented on what a great class they are and was impressed by how eager they are to learn. Well done everybody!
Learning is Fun
Team Teaching
This week our Station Teaching was based on the strand unit, Time. Every week we also like to examine, discuss and learn new mathematical language. Vocabulary understanding is a major contributor to overall comprehension in many content areas, including mathematics. Teaching and learning the language of mathematics is vital for the development of mathematical proficiency. Students' mathematical vocabulary learning is a very important part of their language development and ultimately mathematical proficiency.
