Literacy Lift Off starting in 2019!
Literacy Lift-Off, also known as “Power-Hour or “Guided Reading" is an intensive programme of Reading and Writing, which gives pupils lots of opportunities to read books at their own level of competency. It gradually lifts the complexity of what they can do in both reading and writing. Pupils on the programme will progress up through the levels at their own rate.
Literacy Lift-off is implemented in blocks of 6/8weeks. Pupils are assessed and grouped according to their reading ability prior to the commencement. PM readers are at the core of the programme. Children will also work on writing, phonics and high frequency words. The pupils work in stations to carry out a number of activities in reading and writing, under the guidance of teachers and Special Needs Assistants. They will have daily sessions and each child will take a new book home each night. Teachers have attended training provided by the PDST on implementing Literacy Lift Off in our school.

Active Flag
The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often.
Schools wishing to achieve the ASF begin the process by self-evaluating their current provision across 3 areas: Physical Education, Physical Activity and Partnerships. Schools must also organise an Active School Week programme and commit to having it as part of their annual school calendar. Schools that can say ‘yes’ to all of the ASF success criteria will be awarded with the active flag. The flag remains valid for a period of 3 years after which time schools will be invited to re-apply. ASF is a Department of Education and Skills initiative supported by Healthy Ireland. Kilkishen earned it first Active flag in 2016 and continues to promote healthy living and being active.

Super Troopers is Ireland's first 'health homework' campaign aimed at helping parents and children achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Over 60,000 Irish children aged 4-12 participating in the 30-week programme get an easy-to-follow physical activity ‘homework’ planner with a plan to follow every day.
Each daily plan is based on short-burst activities that marry physical exercise with fun games such as musical bumps, penguin shuffles, freeze tag and wall ball. It looks like fun! |
