The junior and senior infants were delighted last Wednesday to welcome back the 'Stretch-n-Grow' programme to the classroom. We were introduced to this programme last October/November when Monica Greaves very kindly offered to share her expertise and time with us once a week to follow this structured, fun-filled exercise class. The children are learning about the importance of exercise & good nutrition and most importantly that 'Fitness is Fun!'. The programme coincides perfectly with the efforts the class is making in the 'Super Troopers' programme which is being followed by all classes in the school.
The boys and girls of 1st and 2nd class have put on their dancing shoes in an effort to get fitter. During the day we put on our favourite songs and dance to increase our heart rates. Also we have signed up to gonoodle.com which demonstrates exercises for the children to do. This increased activity inside the classroom coupled with the continued implementation of the super trooper programme will benefit the children in their mission to increase physical activity.
As part of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme we invited a business person into the classroom. Brian Bliss co-founder of "The Wall- Dublin's newest bouldering centre" visited Kilkishen N.S. and gave an very insightful talk into entrepreneurship. Pupils prepared and posed targeted questions to Brian, and will now reflect on what they learned helping with the class' Junior Entrepreneur project. Thank you Brian for some great advice and sharing your experience as a successful entrepreneur.
Cathal Mc Namara and Adrian Kelly took part in the Cumann na mBunscoil u11 boys doubles representing Kilkishen National School. Fantastic play by both boys and they now go on to represent Clare in the Munster Championship.
Cathal and Adrian defeated Clarecastle in the quarter final beating them 15-9 and 15-4. In the semi-finals they then went on to play Ogonnolloe and ran out comprehensive winners of 15-8 and 15-4. The final was against Scariff and the Kilkishen boys showed great character to come back from narrowly loosing the first game to win the decisive game 15-8. A huge thank you to Christy Philpott for coaching the boys and girls of Kilkishen N.S. Well done boys and best of luck representing Clare in the Munster competition to be held in Kerry. We are very lucky in Kilkishen N.S. to have Martina O' Hagan and Richard Greaves coaching basketball to all classes every Thursday. There is a great tradition of basketball in the school and the boys and girls are learning new skills each week. Boys and girls in the senior classes are preparing for the Marion Keane Basketball competitions in March and also after school on Friday for the Community Games competition. Every Monday our school Basketball league takes place at lunch time and fixtures and results will be posted here and on the school notice boards.

Super Troopers is the first ever health homework programme in Ireland. It is aimed at helping children become more active and learn about healthy lifestyles.Did you know that only one in five children currently meet the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended daily guidelines of 60 minutes of activity per day? Kilkishen N.S. children participating in Super Troopers received a Super Trooper’s Activity Journal which includes short activities to do each night as part of their homework. Children can complete these fun activities alone or get their family & friends involved. Pupils are incorporating some of the games they into break time and lunch time activities. Watch this promotional video to find out more. On Friday January 22, six groups of pupils from 5th and 6th class pitched their ideas to be chosen as the "Big Idea" for this years Junior Entrepreneur Programme project. The Dragons have an incredibly tough decision to make choosing this year's entry. The demonstrations, presentations and sample products displayed on the day were superb. Possible "Big Ideas" presented included Pamper Products such as lip balms, soaps and bath bombs, Personalised T-Shirts, Chocolate Delights, A Kilkishen Calendar, Healthy Smoothies, and Mystery Boxes. Find out in the coming week which Idea was chosen as this year's entry. Thank you to all for the effort and preparation that went into the event.

A plaque of the 1916 Proclamation was unveiled at the Glenwood memorial site. To celebrate the unveiling of this plaque seven pupils recited the proclamation in roll as one of the seven signatures. The event was very well attended and the pupils were a credit to the school and their families in the performances they gave. Well done to all!

The Green School Committee are promoting Switch Off Fortnight starting on Monday January 11 in Kilkishen N.S. Everyone is encouraged to make a special effort to conserve electricity over the next fortnight. Keep the lights off if not required, power off the interactive whiteboards during break times and switch off any electrical appliances when not in use.
Kilkishen N.S. has recently purchased and installed three Promethean Activboard Touch 78". These touch screen interactive whiteboards allow up to 6 users at a time. They are equipped with separate speakers mounted to the wall and high quality projector. Now all mainstream classes have access to interactive whiteboards which greatly enhance teaching and learning.
