Congratulations to Cathal and Daniel on winning the u/13 boys doubles handball schools title in Tulla on Tuesday evening last. The boys came through a very closely fought final against Ogonnlloe , with the score at one game all they eventually emerged victorious 7-5 in the tie break game. On the path to the final the boys defeated Tuamgraney and Clooney. The boys have now qualified for the Cumann na mBunscol Munster Schools U/13 event where they will represent Clare schools in February. Thank you to everyone that helped prepare the boys for the competition, especially local handball coach Christy Philpott and John Burke.
Anyone that wishes to order a Kilkishen N.S. replica school jersey may do so by completing the order form below and returning to the school before Wednesday February 14. Congratulations to all pupils that received a Gold Star last week for doing their best, showing respect and completing their homework. Stars of the Week were chosen at random from each class. Well done everyone and best of luck again this week! This month during the SPHE lessons, the children in 3rd and 4th Class were given the opportunity to learn about the sensory organs and their functions. They engaged in an information lesson in the form of a brainstorming session. They then showed me what they had learned by calling out the missing word from a list of sentences. The part they enjoyed the most was carrying out various experiments to test the senses. Take a look at the pictures below which show the children investigating Sight, Hearing, Smell, Taste and Touch. To conclude the children wrote fabulous poems about the senses.
The children in Kilkishen N.S. are beating the January blues by keeping active! Children love exploring different movements from the various activities provided by www.gonoodle.com - it is the ideal brain-break to get the children going in the morning! Mr Walsh's Active School Initiative-Super Troopers' Active Homework Journal is taking effect encouraging all pupils in our school to stay fit and healthy at home as well as at school! Who knew homework could be so much fun?! Operation Transformation's '10@10' video movement breaks which are available on www.rtejr.rte.ie are enjoyable and help children to re-energise and refocus and keep motivated in the classroom! The children are also developing ball-handling skills during basketball class facilitated by Martina and Richard. And if you thought we couldn't get any more active as a whole school, the boys and girls from 3rd - 6th are busy with swimming lessons while the junior end of the school partake in running, jumping and throwing activities and games during hurling sessions which are led by coaches Jimmy Meagher and Jake Ryan. "Eat Smart, More More" is a guide booklet for more information on Healthy Eating and Getting Active which is accessible on www.getirelandactive.ie We are firm believers in keeping active, promoting physical activity and maintaining a healthy balanced lifestyle in our school! Seniors and First Class were learning a little about the artist Pablo Picasso this month and the children did their best to develop their own Picasso-Style portraits using oil pastels. Take a look! The children in 3rd and 4th Class were learning about Greek Mythology in History this month. They loved the famous myths of the Ancient Greeks which we explored in class. They were interested in researching other myths and legends and so we decided that we would prepare projects to present to the other classes. The children threw themselves into these projects as they always do, with genuine interest and motivation. They researched various myths and legends and in pairs or groups chose one which they particularly liked. They each presented their projects in different ways, some using visual aids like PowerPoint Presentations and images, others using audio and one group even performed a dramatic piece telling the story of the Minotaur. Parents of 3rd and 4th Class can view video clips of the children presenting their work on Class Dojo. Thank you to everyone that was able to attend last Wednesday nights Parents' Association A.G.M. On the night, Chairperson Brian Kavanagh and Secretary Anne Nash gave a review of the activities carried out in the past year and a plan for the year ahead. Treasurer Heather McArthur gave a financial report on the state of the Parents' Association finances. For any parents that were unable to attend on the night, a copy of the A.G.M. presentation is available to view by clicking on the A.G.M. image link below. Anyone that is willing to get involved in any of the planned activities with the Parents Association please contact the Parents Association Committee.

Congratulations to all pupils that received a Gold Star last week for doing their best, showing respect and completing their homework. Stars of the Week were chosen at random from each class. Well done everyone and best of luck again this week! 4th class boys in Kilkishen N.S. took part in the Cumann na mBunscol indoor event at Cratloe Hall on Friday January 19 last. The Kilkishen boys opening game was against Kilmurry N.S. and this game ended in a very entertaining 3-3 draw. The next two matches were against Cratloe and Sixmilebridge and while the Kilkishen boys did not come out on top, the boys played their hearts out to the very end in both games. Well done to all the boys and we're looking forward to the season ahead. The girls in 5th class have qualified for the next phase of the Cumann na mBunscol Indoor Camogie competition after topping their group on Wednesday January 24 last. The girls recorded victories over Kilmurry N.S, and Cratloe N.S. in the group stages and were narrowly defeated by Sixmilebridge in the final group match. This result meant that both Kilkishen and Sixmilebridge needed a play-off to decide which team would progress to the next phase. After two periods of extra time a very determined Kilkishen side emerged deserving winners. Well done to Lilly Kavanagh, Myra Donnellan, Keelin Moroney, Aoife Frost, Eva Gleeson and Eadaoin Moroney . Basketball coaching continues every Thursday this term with Martina O'Hagan and Richard Greaves. Pupils in all classes are developing their catching, throwing, dribbling and receiving skills. A big thank you to Martina and Richard for their time and willingness to assist with coaching in the school. Congratulations to all pupils that received a Gold Star last week for doing their best, showing respect and completing their homework. Stars of the Week were chosen at random from each class. Well done everyone and best of luck again this week! Yesterday's Station Teaching combined three different subject areas. Mr. Walsh's 3rd Class joined Miss Fawl's classroom for some Problem-solving activities and 'brain trickery', a Religion exercise and a Science investigation. At two of the stations the children explored various word problems. They studied problem-solving and logic cards in groups and attempted to recognize and complete patterns or find mistakes and objects which didn't belong. They also worked together to solve word problems on the Interactive Whiteboard. Activities like this stimulate and challenge young minds and introduce and develop a wide range of problem-solving and logic strategies. At another station the children were treated to an amazing range of tricks that fool your brain! They were mystified by the illusions, wordplay and numbers that defy logic in this book 'Mind-bending Brain Trickery'. As part of our 'Grow in Love' Religion programme we had been discussing the people we pray for. Yesterday the children each made their own 'Five-Finger Prayer'. The 'Five-Finger Prayer' invites us to focus on our fingers as a reminder to pray for others. We also engaged in a Science lesson based on the Strand Unit 'Materials and Change'. In groups the children investigated what happens when different things (salt, sugar, sand, cooking oil, flour, coffee and washing powder) are mixed with water. They described their predictions and then we tested each material and recorded the results. We noted any changes that took place and we then discussed how mixtures could be separated.
