The Kilkishen Boys Basketball team qualified as group winners in today's Marion Keane Memorial competition held at Cratloe Hall. The boys had fantastic victories over Tulla, and Bridgetown and were narrowly beaten by Kilmurry. Having scored a total of 26 points in all three matches it was the Kilkishen team that progressed with the highest scoring total. Well done to all the 5th and 6th class boys. They will now take part in the winners section and try to qualify for the finals day later next month. For all the latest news and upcoming events, have a look at the Newsletter for March. The following students were selected by their class teachers for exceptional effort as the "Stars of the Week" last week. Each pupil tried their best, showed respect and completed their homework each day. Congratulations to all pupils that managed to be in the running for the awards in each class. Keep up the good work and watch out for this week's winners! Kilkishen school debating team competed in the Clare Schools Primary Debating quarter-final today at Kilkishen Cultural Centre. The Kilkishen team were proposing the motion "All families should have pets." The team was superbly led by team captain Eadaoin Moroney. Eadaoin opened the debate with compelling arguments detailing why all families should have pets. Next, main speakers, Aoife Frost and Keelin Moroney, delivered excellent arguments supporting the motion. In the cross-fire round, Finn Bliss, Myra Donnellan, and Seán Ryan argued and debated points made by the opposing team. The standard of the debate was exceptionally high and the Kilkishen team gave one of the best displays from any debating team representing the school ever. However, only one team could progress to make the semi-finals, and adjudicator Antoinette Barry sided with the Ogonelloe team by the slightest of margins on the day. The team can be very proud of their efforts and of how they represented the school with distinction. A huge thank you to Ms. O'Shea for her help preparing the team and to the boys and girls for giving their all in the event. Well done everyone! Seniors and first class have been participating in a walking debate. Children were given a particular motion and they had to walk to designated areas of the classroom where the flash cards .‘I agree’, ‘I disagree’ and ‘I don’t know’ were displayed. The boys and girls had great fun justifying their reasons for either agreeing or disagreeing with the various statements teacher posed upon them! Children from Junior and Senior Infant classes had a wonderful day out on Thursday last, visiting both the Fire station and Garda station in Ennis. Thanks to Mark and Shane for giving us an enjoyable guided tour of the fire station - the boys and girls loved learning about the fire fighters' job and about fire safety. The children were brilliant at asking the firemen lots of interesting questions! Take a peek at the other activities we got to do at the fire station. Thanks to Eileen and Deirdre for showing us around the Garda station. The children were invited to keep watch on the cameras situated around the town, they participated in cops and robbers role-play and even got the chance to sit in the squad car! The children were so good that they received treats and Garda medals! Well done to all! 5 Laptops have very kindly been sponsored by Kilkishen N.S. Parents Association. These laptops will support integrating IT into pupils learning through project work, researching online, using educational websites and facilitating Accelerated Reader tests. Thank you to our Parents Association for their continued support. Our school now has refurbished laptops in all mainstream classrooms assisting with teaching and learning on a daily basis. First and second class children enjoyed a trip to the Clare Museum in Ennis where they participated in a workshop about Saint Brigid. The boys and girls listened to stories, songs and traditions associated with Saint Brigid. The children were invited to make their very own saint Brigid’s crosses using rushes. Well done to all children!
The children in seniors and first class were learning about sources of light. They made the most of the spring sunshine today, investigating how shadows are formed. The children drew outlines of the shadows created by their teddy figurines on their A4 blank sheet and learned how to shade them in. The boys and girls also had great fun chasing each other’s shadows in the yard!
3rd and 4th class visited the Clare Museum in Ennis last Friday where they listened to stories and traditions about St Brigid. They heard stories about St. Brigid's Cloak and its use for healing and protection, St Brigid's Ribbon which was placed on the head of a person who had a headache, and they also learned about the many different variations of St. Brigid's cross while making one of their own. |
