The students of 2nd and 3rd class took advantage of the sun today and learned the basic skills of Gaelic football. The children loved the numerous drills and hand passing games. The students showed excellent hand eye co-ordination and some fancy footwork that wouldn't be out of place on the Dublin team.
1st and 2nd Class are engrossed in the reading of the novel Charlotte's Web by E.B. White at the moment and were inspired to carry out research and write reports about pigs and spiders. The class were learning fun facts about spiders and had fun working in groups to label parts of the spider. Lily brought in a spider that she discovered at home to show the class! Thank goodness no one has arachnophobia! The children carried out an experiment to investigate how a spider moves along its web and catch its prey using masking tape and cooking oil. Each pupil then made their own booklet recording the life cycle of the spider and we even spotted some egg sacs and spiders on the outside of our classroom windows today! The students of 2nd and 3rd class have enjoyed learning about the Normans and the Titanic. They were fascinated to learn how castles were built. They drew inspiration from Bunratty castle to build their own models. They also loved learning about the Titanic and how the largest ship in the world at the time was built in a shipyard in Belfast. The students built some impressive ships of their own.
Pupils from First to Sixth class continue using the Accelerated Reader program this term. Accelerated Reader uses online quizzes to test pupils comprehension having completed a book. The program records the books, words and daily minutes pupils have engaged with reading. All pupils are working towards achieving individual and class reading targets. Have a look at some of the incredible readers this week. This term pupils have read over 22 million words and completed tests on over 1800 books! Congratulations to pupils that were selected as Stars of the Week in Ms. MacLean's, Mr. Walsh's and Ms. Fawl's classrooms. At the end of March we were really busy getting ready for Easter and we really loved wearing purple to support Epilepsy Ireland! During April, we learned all about 2D shapes and found lots of them in our school! Active schools week was amazing in the beautiful sunshine.
Pupils in 5th and 6th class are taking part in a school soccer league that will take place during lunchtime during May. The league will be run on a round robin format with the top two teams playing in the soccer league finals at the end of the month. Over the past few weeks we have enjoyed searching for 2D shapes in our infant classroom and in our school environment. Junior and Senior Infants really enjoyed getting outdoors last week in the lovely sunshine!
