Congratulations to our Cumann na mBunscol u/11 team that competed in the singles and doubles competitions on Wednesday January 29 last. Ellie Frost won gold in the U/11 singles with Clodagh O'Hagan and Chloe Hannon winning silver in the doubles contest. Well done girls!
Congratulations to Dan and Jamie Moroney on winning silver medals in the U/11 Boys Doubles schools handball competition held in Tulla on Monday January 27. Eoin Shanahan gave a great display narrowly loosing out to the eventual winner in the singles competition in Clooney Handball Alley on Monday evening also. On Tuesday night the Boys U/13 pairing of Martin Bon and Callum Casey were beaten in a close opening match by eventual winners Scarriff at Tulla Handball Alley. Well done to all competitors and best of luck to our girls taking part in the U/11 and U/13 competitions being held in Clooney and Tulla this evening.
Fiona Barry from an Taisce visited the school on Friday to help the committee to map the results of the travel survey which was conducted in November. The results can be found on our green schools notice board. The map shows that a high percentage of our students live within walking, cycling or scooting distance of the school. We will continue this year to promote walking to school and the school has recently been approved for a scooter parking rack grant. We will strive to make Kilkishen National School an environmentally aware school and the children are determined to play their part in doing so. The following students were selected by their class teachers for exceptional effort as the "Stars of the Week" last week. Each pupil tried their best, showed respect and completed their homework each day. Congratulations to all pupils that managed to be in the running for the awards in each class. Keep up the good work and watch out for this week's winners! 1st and 2nd class were learning about Abstract Artists; Piet Mondrian and Jackson Pollock. Take a look at our Mondrian-and-Pollock-inspired masterpieces! There were some very close and exciting games this week during Round 2 of our school soccer league. There were wins for Ireland, Brazil, England and France. Brazil and France are the early league leaders with maximum points after 2 games. Winners and runners up in each category have now qualified to represent Kilkishen/O'Callaghans Mills at the Clare Community Games finals. Congratulations to all medal winners and everyone that took part. Confirmation pupils at Kilkishen N.S. received a beautiful letter from Bishop Fintan Monaghan on Tuesday. In the letter Bishop Fintan thanked pupils for their letters which were sent in preparation for this year's Confirmation ceremony on February 14. Pupils were delighted to read Bishop Fintan's response and are eagerly looking forward to their special day. Applications for enrolment to Kilkishen N.S. for new entrants is now open. Keep up the good work and watch out for this week's winners! Round 1 of Kilkishen N.S. Soccer League commenced this week with opening round victories for France, Brazil,Spain and Italy. Teams are 6 a-side and consist of pupils from 3rd to 6th classes. Matches are played during lunchtimes on Wednesday and Thursday each week. A total of 9 teams are taking part and each team will complete their 8 league games over the next 9 weeks. The rules are simple: Goalkeepers must throw the ball out and teams must play out from the back. Best of luck to everyone taking part. The students of 2nd and 3rd class had great fun today working together to piece together the first five chapters of the story Alice in Wonderland. The students will continue with the story in the next few weeks. Next week pupils from 3rd to 6th classes will commence a school soccer league during lunchtimes. 54 pupils signed up to take part in the league which consists of 9 teams with each team having 6 players. Teams are mixed with boys and girls from different class levels. Captains of each team are 6th class pupils that will referee games they are not involved in. The children discussed many ways in which they could help reduce our carbon footprint and decided planting trees is one way that could help reduce the amount of Co2 in the atmosphere. Here they are planting horse chestnut trees. For the latest news and upcoming events in January, please read this month's newsletter. Both the Winter Hurling Cup and Shield finals ended all square on December 20 last. This resulted in Clare and Limerick captains, Martin Bon and Callum Casey, both lifting and sharing the Cup with their teams. In the Shield decider Galway and Wexford captains, Emer Cassidy and Hayley McMahon, raised the Shield after another thrilling contest. Well done to all teams and everyone that took part in this year's winter hurling league. |
