Well done to Béibhinn and Molly who represented Kilkishen N.S. at the Mini-Scientist Regional Final today.
Intel Shannon brought together students from 19 different schools in Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Galway. The girls showcased their fantastic project and the judges were so impressed with their demonstrations, their folder and their visual displays. The regional final was filled with innovative and imaginative projects and after a very difficult task of deliberation, the judges compiled their list of winning projects. We wish the schools going forward all the best. We are so proud of Béibhinn and Molly and all the pupils in Kilkishen N.S. who entered the competition. We were blown away by their enthusiasm, knowledge and passion. The future of science is in safe hands!
The videos the girls used in their presentation are shared below:
The students in 2nd and 3rd class got some practice in today for their Christmas shopping. We used Symth's catalogues to assist us in learning about money. Each group had to find three items for 50 euro or under. The class really enjoyed the lesson and will have plenty of ideas to put down on their letters to Santa.
First and second class had great fun carrying out science experiments and activities during science week. They became engineers during the week and were challenged to construct a frame strong enough to hold a book using cocktail sticks and marshmallows. They also carried out several experiments including: how plants drink water, how to make playdough by mixing materials, how warm water dissolves sugar, oxygen is needed to keep a flame burning and how to separate salt and pepper by using a balloon. Take a look at some of the fun and hard work below. The opening round of the school Winter Hurling and Camogie League get under way on Tuesday November 22. 49 pupils and 8 teams from 4th, 5th and 6th classes are taking part. There are two groups of 4 teams with the top two teams in each group qualifying for the Cup semi-finals and 3rd and 4th places qualifying for the Shield competition. Matches take place every lunchtime with our Cup and Shield Finals to be played on Wednesday December 21. Good luck to all taking part. Each week pupils are asked to remember 3 important rules: 1. Show Respect 2. Do Your Best and 3. Complete Homework. In each classroom pupils that manage to demonstrate these on a daily basis are in the running for special weekly awards announced every Monday. Well done to all our award winners this week. Best of luck next week Pupils at Kilkishen N.S. received a wonderful photo frame and message from the residents and staff at Cahercalla Hospice on Friday. The framed message and treats were a Thank You from all at Cahercalla for everyone that supported the recent Halloween fundraiser. We are delighted to support this worthy cause. Our framed message will hang proudly on our school hallway.
The students in 2nd and 3rd class are very excited for the start of the World Cup 2022. Each student has been assigned a Country. They will complete a project on this Country and present it to the class. This is a great way to incoporate SESE and sport together to make a fun and relevant way to learn.

Best of luck next week Congratulations to our cross-country athletes that competed in the Clare Schools Finals held at Lee's Road on Tuesday November 15. Kilkishen N.S. had 3 teams qualify for the finals in the U/8 girls, U/8 boys and U/10 categories. A special mention to John MacDonnacha who finished 4th in the u/8 boys event. Thank you also to all parents that supported and helped out on the day. Congratulations Molly and Beibhinn on being selected as the winning project at this year's Intel Mini Scientist school fair. Their project "The Science Lab-How to Make Helium" was selected as the school entry for this year's county showcase event to be held at Intel in Shannon on November 30. Runners-Up were Jane and Chloe with their entry "Let There be Light" which demonstrated how to make a circut and electric light using graphite. Well done to all that took part and we wish Molly and Beibhinn all the best at the county showcase exhibition. Details of the daily lunch service available for all pupils at Kilkishen N.s. can be found on the attached flyer. On Monday November 14, pupils from 4th to 6th class showcased their entries to this year's Intel Mini Scientist competition. A total of 18 projects were presented as part of Kilkishen N.S. Science Fair. Four Intel judges visited the school and interviewed the groups about each project. Congratulations to all participants on the fabulous projects created and the amazing work carried out guided by Ms. Fawl and Ms. Whitney. A great start to this year's Science Week 2022! The students of 2nd and 3rd class had a busy start to Science week 2022. In their class groups they designed and constructed a rocket. The children took control of the project from idea stage right through to the finished product. The project was aimed at promoting the children's communication and designation skills and they surpassed my expectations with how they collaborated. The project incorporated a lot of different aspects of the curriculum from Science to procedural writing. We also watched some exciing footage from NASA space lauches which was very popular with the students.
The students are already looking forward to their next exciting project.
First and second class had great fun learning all about their taste buds in science. They explored sweet, sour, salty and bitter tastes in class. Take a look at some of the fun we had!
