This week we are celebrating two pupils for their extraordinary efforts at reading and writing. Dylan in 1st class has read over 51 books on his reading log chart and Ava published her beautiful story about kittens. Well done Dylan and Ava and keep up the great work!
Pupils this week were learning about carnivorous plants. The plants displayed above attract and eat insects. Thanks to Meggie for teaching us about these plants and how intelligent Mother Nature can be!
The camogie girls competed at the I.N.T.O. mini 7's finals on Wednesday at Sixmilebridge. The girls were grouped with Ballyea and Crusheen having qualified for the finals before Easter. In the first game the girls had a great win against Ballyea and played exceptionally well. In the deciding group game a very talented Crusheen team defeated our girls 3-1 to 1-2. We are very proud of the girls having competed so well in the competition. Lots of great days ahead!
Well done to all the children who took part in the hurling blitz today. It was held in Sixmilebridge and was all about participation and having fun, which we certainly did! A huge thank you to Peter Casey who organised and coordinated the event. The children in 3rd and 4th Class produced thought-provoking and evocative freeze-frames during the drama lesson. These freeze-frames were based on what they have learned in class about the 1916 Rising. They surprised me with their impressive insight and were extremely respectful in their representations of this historic event. The boys and girls from 1st and 2nd class made the most of the fine weather by planting sunflower seeds. We learned about the importance of sunlight for them to grow. The students loved working with soil and we may have some future botanists on our hands.
During last week a number of pupils from the junior classes completed their reading logs. We are very proud of all the pupils that are working so hard at their letter sounds and library books. Infants will be pairing up with a reading buddy from 5th & 6th in May for shared reading. We are looking forward to to Fridays shared reading classes very much. Well done everyone.
Congratulations to our Pupils of the Week from last week. Well done to all pupils that qualified for the draw having completed all their homework, tried their best and shown respect all week. Pupils that have earned 10 stamps on their reward charts received a special Principal's Certificate to mark 10 weeks of outstanding effort. Below are pupils from 3rd and 4th that have earned their certificate.
The children of 1st and 2nd enjoyed learning about Pablo Picasso this week. We also got the chance to create our Picasso inspired artwork. The students enjoyed the eccentricity of the artwork and learned that all art does not have to look the same.
With the sun shining down on us and our lunches in our hands, the infant class made the long journey(!!) to the playground today, for a picnic and a lovely play!! Let's hope the sunshine lasts!! The infants have returned back to school after the Easter break fully determined to continue with their great exercise and fitness routine! We've been having lots and lots of fun preparing for the Run for Fun in U.L. with Martina, Monica and Edel. Also, we've been enjoying developing our agility, balance and coordination skills with John Condon every Thursday. We make sure to include a little bit of movement and exercise into our timetable every day, even when it's not P.E. day! The infants had a lovely time on the last day before the Easter holidays, spending time with their good friend Odhran before he began his big adventure - his move to the U.S.A. with his family! We had an Easter Egg hunt, playtime in the playground, a fun time in the classroom and a little party to celebrate friendship and new beginnings. Odhran has been in contact with us already - he e-mailed us this week! He's having a great time in the sunshine - he's been wearing his t-shirts and shorts since he arrived in America! He likes his new school - especially ice-cream day on Fridays!! He has been collecting lizards in his back garden and has even had time to teach hurling to some American boys!! The infant class are preparing our e-mail for Odhran - our new pen-pal!! There was some fantastic hurling witnessed in Tulla today at the I.N.T.O. mini 7's blitz played between Tulla, Crusheen, Kilmurray and Kilkishen. Tulla emerged from the group with a very narrow victory over Crusheen in the deciding match. The Kilkishen boys can be very proud of their efforts and gave a great account of themselves considering what a young squad participated. In each of the games the boys played their hearts out and never gave up. In the first game Kikishen played Tulla and had excellent displays from Adrian Kelly, Mikey McMahon and Sean Boyce scoring 1-1. The second match against Crusheen also saw great displays from Fionn Hickey, Mikey Canny and Darragh Moroney. In the final game Kikishen played their best hurling and showed the great potential the boys possess. Cathal McNamara, Tj Stewert, and Oisín Cleary amongst the boys that played exceptionally well. The boys will have a hurling blitz and Cuman na mBunscol games to look forward to this term. Well done to everyone involved.
The Kilkishen girls basketball team took part in the Marion Keane Memorial tournament in Gurteen today. The girls had two very impressive wins against Tulla and Doora scoring freely in both games. The final group game against Crusheen was a very close affair between two really well matched sides. The contest ebbed and flowed and with 5 minutes remaining Kilkishen led 6 points to 4. However, Crusheen finished the game very strongly scoring some superb baskets eventually running out 12-6 winners. The girls had great displays on the day from Ava O'Connell, Katie Frost, Maria Machedo and Chloe Philpott. Thank you to Martina O'Hagan and Richard Greaves for their help and dedication in preparing the girls.
Congratulations to our Pupils of the Week from last week. Well done to all pupils that qualified for the draw having completed all their homework, tried their best and shown respect all week. The Great Limerick Run is taking place on Sat. April 30. Pupils of Kilkishen N.S. are invited to participate in this fun event and help raise money for Barringtons Hospital and our school. Every participant will return €5 to our school so all support is greatly appreciated. Also if Kilkishen can commit 20 people to help out with the event this will return €1000 to our school. Pupils have been given an application form to participate and if you can volunteer a couple of hours on the day please let us know. Training for the event started yesterday. Watch how pupils got on below. Thanks to Martina, Monica and Edel.
Well done to Katie and Rebecca on winning the county community games skittles finals recently and qualifying for the Munster finals. They defeated Clooney/Quin in the finals and were crowned county champions! Well done and best of luck in the Munster finals.
Congratulations Chelsea on captaining the Clare u/12 girls soccer team that competed against Galway recently. Chelsea a member of the Tulla Utd. club has been selected for the county u/12 girls side and was chosen to captain the side when they played Galway. Chelsea is a relative of Irish soccer international Sean St. Ledger so it's clear she is keeping her family tradition going. Everyone at Kilkishen N.S. is very proud.
Congratulations to our winners of"Pupil of the Week" in Ms. Maxted, Mr. Walsh's and Ms. Fawls classes. Next week pupils that have received 10 stamps on their Principal's Reward Chart will be awarded a special certificate on Friday. Any pupil that tries their best, shows respect and completes all their homework receives a stamp each week. Best of luck everyone!
