The students were learning about 3-d shapes this week and to celebrate the start of spring constructed beautiful 3-d tulips.
Patricia Wilde from Wilde's Chocolate factory in Tuamgraney visited pupils in 5th and 6th class as part of this year's Junior Entrepreneur project. Patricia gave a very informative talk on how to make an idea into a profit making business. Patricia shared her experience of setting up Wilde's Chocolate Factory in 1997 and how she identified a gap in the market for handmade chocolate gifts for tourists visiting the West of Ireland. Patricia kindly brought sample chocolates for the pupils to enjoy. The pupils will now put Patricia's 10 steps to setting up a successful business into practice when they present their group ideas to "The Dragons Den" this Friday. Congratulations to all pupils that received a Gold Star last week for doing their best, showing respect and completing their homework. Stars of the Week were chosen at random from each class. Well done everyone and best of luck again this week! The 6th class debating team recorded their first victory when they defeated Killaloe Boys N.S. on Thursday last at Kilkishen Cultural Centre. The team, lead by captain Julie Murphy were proposing the motion "Children under 14 years of age should not be permitted to use social media." In a very well contested debate, adjudicator Antoinette Barry declared Kilkishen N.S. had just edged a very close contest. The team members included Lola Moroney and Azarah Keane as main speakers and Emily Pewter, T.J. Stewart and Ciara Nash as crossfire speakers. The team will now travel to Tulla for the quarter final round against St. Mochulla's. Well done to all involved and to teacher Ms. Fawl for the great work she has carried out helping the pupils. Seniors and First Class enjoyed participating in Friendship Week activities exploring the theme of 'Bravery' through art, drama, song-singing, stories, fun and games. Children enjoyed circle time activities learning the art of listening, making eye-contact and turn-taking. Compliment Showers, Loop cards and games like 'pass the smile' and 'pass the handshake' were a big hit during circle time. The boys and girls wrote down an act of kindness each day and put it into the Kindness jar and each pupil then picked out a card which gave them their mission of kindness or good deed to demonstrate that day! Children listened to stories about sharing and taking turns and made a friendship wreath highlighting the qualities of a good friend. The class loved playing the blind-fold trust game outside and enjoyed singing 'You've got a Friend in Me'! Friendship bracelets were a big hit promoting friendship throughout the school for Friendship Week! This morning we were visited by Mairead Griffin and a colleague for our third Green Flag Inspection. The Green Schools Committee shared all the work they have been doing with them and showed them the movies they made as part of the One Good Idea Project last year. They directed the ladies to our water butt and went through everything in our Water folder and on our Green Schools Notice Board. They were so impressed with all the hard work the children in Kilkishen NS have put in in order to try and save water. We are extremely hopeful and confident that we will hear good news about the Green Flag in the coming days. Below are some photos from yesterday's Day of Action. We started the day off with our final trip to The Ennis Leisure Centre Swimming Pool. When we returned to school, the children in 3rd and 4th Class lead water based experiments and shared these with the younger classes. The senior classes and the Infants - 1st Class also had a movie viewing in Mr. Walsh's classroom. They watched our Water Mannequin Challenge, the drama The Water Squad Saves the Day and the video from our trips to Ardnacrusha and the local water treatment plant. This is a reminder that the school replica jersey order form deadline is today Wednesday February 14. Order forms are available to download here and must be returned to the office before school closes for mid-term today.
We will hold a Water themed Day of Action tomorrow. The Green Schools Committee will wear blue to promote awareness of saving water. All children are encouraged to bring a 'Low Water Lunch' to school. As meat has a large water footprint, why not try a meat free sandwich tomorrow. We will engage in a number of fun activities with water as the common theme. All of this will hopefully help us to secure our third Green Flag on Wednesday after our inspection takes place.
Congratulations to all the children from Kilkishen N.S. who qualified for the County Clare Community Games Handwriting Competition. It was fantastic to see so many winners from Kilkishen being selected to represent the Kilkishen/O'Callaghan's Mills/Oatfield area. The county competition will take place this Saturday Feb 10th in St. Joseph's Secondary School in Tulla at 10 a.m. Candidates are advised to be there at 9:30 a.m. and to bring a pencil and an A4 sized book to lean on as they will only be provided with a single leaf of paper.
Best of luck! Congratulations to all pupils that received a Gold Star last week for doing their best, showing respect and completing their homework. Stars of the Week were chosen at random from each class. Well done everyone and best of luck again this week! The Kilkishen N.S. 5th class camogie team competed in the Indoor Cumann na mBunscol second phase blitz on Wednesday last. The girls had great performances against Feakle and Clonlara earning two very well earned draws. In the final game the girls defeated St. Senan's Shannon and were waiting on the final game to go their way to see if they would reach the next phase. However, even though the girls were unbeaten on the day, Feakle progressed to the next stages . Well done to the girls involved and we look forward to the rest of the season ahead.
Seniors and First Class were learning about Saint Brigid on February 1st. They also learned the art of creating St. Brigid's crosses using colourful paper. Thanks to Ms. O' Shea for helping us to make our St. Brigid's Crosses. Spring has officially begun!
This week the students of 1st and 2nd class went on a trip to the Museum in Ennis. When they arrived they attended a workshop which told the children all about St. Brigid. The children also learned how to make butter and buttermilk. The students really enjoyed the trip and the museum is truly an invaluable resource in the county. Congratulations to Lilly and Áine on winning the u/11 girls doubles handball schools title in Tulla on Wednesday evening last. The girls have now qualified for the Cumann na mBunscol Munster Schools U/11 event where they will represent Clare schools on the weekend of February 10 at a venue to be confirmed. This latest victory has capped a super week for handball in the school. Well done to all competitors that took part over the three day event. Thank you to parents that helped prepare the boys and girls for the competition and local handball coach Christy Philpott for running the school trials and coaching sessions.
