For the latest news and upcoming events at Kilkishen N.S. please see the newsletter for December. 6th class pupil Martin Bon has been selected to represent Clare in the Munster Primary Schools Handball competition which takes place this weekend in Clooney and Tulla handball alleys. Congratulations to Martin on his selection and we wish the team the very best of luck this weekend.
The following students were selected by their class teachers for exceptional effort as the "Stars of the Week" last week. Each pupil tried their best, showed respect and completed their homework each day. Congratulations to all pupils that managed to be in the running for the awards in each class. Keep up the good work and watch out for this week's winners! Action continued in Group 1 of the school winter league this week and saw a big win for Clare beating Dublin on Thursday. Tipperary are playing their first game against Galway on Friday and will look to catch early group leaders Clare and Galway both of whom have 3 points after 2 games. A win for Galway today will see them guarantee qualification for the Cup semi-finals taking on a qualifier from Group 2 in two weeks time. At Kilkishen Cultural Centre on Monday Novmeber 18, the 6th class debating team proposed the motion "All Primary School Children Should Be Banned From Owning A Mobile Phone". The team was captained by Áine Moroney and ably assisted by main speakers Emma Zimmermann and Eimear Cassidy. Independent adjudicator, Liam Lawlor, complimented both teams on the standard achieved at today's debate and highlighted the level of research, presentation skills and persuasiveness evident in all speeches. The Kilkishen team were deemed to have carried the motion and now qualify for the next stage of the Clare Primary Schools Debating competition. Well done to both teams and best of luck to all speakers as they prepare for the next motion. The green schools committee had a special visitor today. Her name is Fiona Barry and she took the committee on a walk
around Kilkishen. This walk was very educational because it served as a walkability audit. This audit helped identify obstacles that may stop students from walking to school. The green schools committee are hoping to encourage other students to walk or cycle to school. The findings of the audit will be placed on our green schools display board in the school. On Wednesday November 13 at Lee's Road in Ennis, 5 pupils took part in the Clare Schools Cross Country finals having qualified from the East Clare trials held in September. In horrendous weather conditions our five athletes did superb. Well done to each competitor on making the finals. There was not to separate Clare and Galway in the school winter league group game played on Friday. A game that was very even throughout ended 7 goals a piece with Galway the early group leaders with 3 points from 2 matches played. This week action turns to group 2 with games fixed for lunchtime on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Keep up the good work and watch out for this week's winners! Pupils of Kilkishen N.S. took part in the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal this year. Over 100 donations were made and boxes were collected from school on Friday November 8. These shoeboxes will be delivered to vulnerable children oversees and will make a huge difference to these children experiences this Christmas. Kilkishen N.S. prides itself on being an environmentally aware school. This year the school is seeking the travel flag as part of the Green Schools programme. We have set up a committee to come up with ideas to make our school greener and more environmentally friendly. This year we will be promoting that pupils where possible can make an effort to walk or cycle to school.
Galway and Dublin took on each other in the opening game of this year's winter hurling league. A close game until the closing stages saw Galway claim the opening points. On Friday Galway are in action again taking on Clare to see if they can maintain their winning start in Group 1. Next week action in Group 2 commences with 3 games to take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The boys and girls of 2nd and 3rd class love a good debate therefore we have designated Thursday as our class debate day. This week we had a lively debate on the merits of homework. This is a fantastic oral language development exercise for the children and also will lead to confidence in their beliefs. We will continue to debate different topics every Thursday. Kilkishen N.S. pupils from 4th, 5th and 6th took part in a design a recyclable cup competition for primary pupils. The competition run by Ennis manufacturing company Cup Print, invited pupils to design a reyclable cup that celebrated Cup Prints 10th birthday. Amy Neville and Áine Moroney were selected as finalists this week and attended Cup Prints 10 year anniversary celebrations. From 30 schools that entered, 10 finalists were shortlisted to attend Cup Prints Manufacturing Plant in Ennis with Minister for Trade Pat Breen as special guest. Pupils were treated to a guided tour of the plant and witness how Cup Prints recyclable cups are made from design to manufacturing stage. Amy Neville was awarded the overall second place design and pictures of the day can be viewed below. Well done to all pupils that took part and Amy and Áine on their special awards. There were some great costumes which you can enjoy below. On Wednesday November 6, Kilkishen N.S. winter hurling league commences. There are 8 teams competing with pupils from 2nd to 6th class invited to take part. This week 3 fixtures from group 1 takes place, with group 2 starting next week. Both groups will be completed in November with Cup and Shield semi-finals taking place in December. Best of luck to the 8 teams taking part and we look forward to viewing a great competition.
