Parents organised an outdoor celebration and farewell send off for our 6th class pupils as we finished another school year at 12 noon on Wednesday June 30. The pupils were also treated to a "Drive By" parade as they finished school. Thank you to all the parents involved in arranging this lovely send off as well as some very delicious gifts for the staff at Kilkishen N.S. Enjoy the summer holidays everyone! An outdoors graduation celebration was held on Tuesday June 29. Pupils of 6th class received graduation certificates, a graduation "Class of 2021" hoodie and a class photograph of 6th class taken on top of the 12 O'Clock Hills. Player of the Year awards were also awarded to Luke Canny boys soccer, Eve Cleary girls soccer, Louie Donnellan hurling, Ellie Frost camogie, Dyaln O'Brien "Reader of The Year" and Declan Greaves "Student of the Year". Pupils also enjoyed a pizza party and graduation cakes compliments of the PAC. Photos of pupils receiving their certificates can be viewed below. On Tuesday Monday June 28, pupils from 4th, 5th and 6th classes went on a cycle tour taking in a visit to the 12 O'Clock Hills at Belvoir. Pupils followed the 8.5 km blue route and enjoyed a picnic on reaching the summit. Images from the day can be viewed below.
On Wednesday June 30 we wish pupils of 6th class farewell as they leave Kilkishen N.S. Some of the highlights from their time at Kilkishen N.S. can be viewed in this slideshow below. We wish them all the very best as they transfer to St. Joseph's Secondary School in Tulla.
The children in Junior and Senior Infants have been very busy during June. They have worked very hard on their reading and learned all about the value of money! The pleasant weather helped to make Cumann na mBunscol hurling/camogie week a great success. Sports day brought a lot of enjoyment and the ice cream surprise from the Parents Association was a highlight for all of the children.
For the latest news and updates from Kilkishen N.S., please read the End of Year Newsletter below. 4th and 5th Class were introduced to engineering yesterday by working in teams of 2-4 to solve a problem. They had to create a tool using a string and a rubber band that could be used to stack a group of cups into a pyramid. This activity required team work, cooperation, creativity and problem solving. Every team mastered the challenge! Well done.
The boys and girls in the infant room had great fun during Cumann na mBunscol week. They loved showing off all the skills that they have learned this year and having lots of fun with their friends.
Thanks to Clare GAA and O'Callaghan Mills GAA for the wonderful coaches we were lucky to have this year. Special thanks to Micheál Duffy, Jim Corbett and Killian Nugent for their excellent work. They shared their knowledge and love of the game with the children in such an inclusive and fun way! Congratulations to Clodagh, Meggie, Megan and Olivia on their fantastic achievements over the weekend.
Clodagh was participating in the Clare Athletics and she won all her events which included an 80m Sprint, the Long Jump and the Short Putt. She surpassed her previous PBs and she is now preparing for the Munsters. Well done and best of luck in your future competitions Clodagh. We had another competitor from Kilkishen in the Clare Athletics 80m Sprint. Meggie Zimmerman also ran and she came in third place. Great job Meggie. Megan came second in the Clare Community Games Solo Singing competition and Olivia came fourth in the County Handwriting competition. Well done girls. We are very proud of you all. Senior pupils completed their class leagues on Friday with a Cup and Shield Final. Two very tight entertaining games resulted in victories for Limerick and Tipperary. Player of the Match awards were won by Lily Boyce and Luke Canny. Team captains Lochlainn Collins and Louie Donnellan lifted to trophies at the end of the games to commence great celebrations. In the 4th and 5th class league final, Jamie Moroney and Clodagh O'Hagan were winners of the Player of the Match award with Tipperary edging a very close contest. Jamie Moroney lifted the trophy to complete a very entertaining Cumann na mBunscol week. Congratulations to everyone that took part. The students of 2nd and 3rd class had a great week celebrating Cumann na mBunscol week. The students participated in a hurling league consisting of four teams Clare, Cork, Limerick and Kilkenny. The shield final was won by Limerick and the cup final between Kilkenny and Cork was a draw. Presentations of certs were made to all players and players of the match after the finals. Well done to all involved. Kilkishen N.S. had a number of local and county level prize winners in the recent Community Games Events for 2021. Megan Kiernan won Gold at local level and silver at County level in the Solo Singing event. Lochalinn Collins was the Gold medal winner in the u/12 Art competition at local level, with Riadh O'Flynn and Olivia Kiernan claiming silver and bronze. Lochlainn also claimed the U/12 Solo Music winner title at local level and 4th place at county level. Lilly Boyce, Charleigh McInerney and Hayley McMahon were the Gold, Silver and Bronze winners in the U/14 Art category at local level. In the u/12 Handwriting, Olivia Kiernan, Annie Grant and Kahlan Kennedy were the winners at local level with Olivia claiming 4th place at county level. Finally, Aoibheann O'Mara, Ruairí Frost and Padraig O'Brien were the U/10 Handwriting winners at local level with Aoibheann winning Bronze at County level. Well done to all our winners! Pupils from First to Sixth class have been using the Accelerated Reader program all this term. Accelerated Reader uses online quizzes to test pupils’ comprehension having completed a book. The program records the number of books, number of words read and the number of daily minutes pupils have engaged with reading. All pupils are working towards achieving individual and class reading targets. All pupils are making a huge effort this term to read every day and achieve their reading targets. To date this term pupils have read an incredible 35 million words and over 2600 books! Congratulations to Ruadh Donovan on becoming a “Reading Millionaires” having surpassed one million words read. He joins a very exclusive club in our school. Weekly award winners are celebrated on our school website and school noticeboard each week. Well done all! Check out the gorgeous Sock Bunnies made during today's Art lesson by 4th and 5th Class. Great job everyone! 4th and 5th Class had fun this week designing and building their own roller coasters. They worked in groups, continually testing and modifying their designs. They collaborated to find ways of building loops, curves, hill-dips and support pillars. I was so impressed with their problem-solving skills and their creativity. Take a look at the thrill-seeking designs they came up with! The children in the infant room have been really busy over the past month. We learned all about the lifecycle of the butterfly, the Olympic Games and we are on the way to becoming excellent readers. A definite highlight over the past month has been the fun and informative 'Show and Tell' that we have each week. The children have shared their wonderful knowledge of some of their most treasured items.
1st and 2nd Class recently completed some individual project work. The class were learning about the town of Birr, Co. Offaly in our Unlocking S.E.S.E. books. In response, each child decided to complete a project on either a village, town or city. Meanwhile, Alex worked on a project teach us all about the Solar System.
