Seniors and First Class are learning about procedural writing.
Children worked in groups to organise a procedural writing text of how to make a delicious sandwich. Children learned the steps of how to make a jam sandwich, wash your hands and post a letter. It was great to see the Active schools committee today at lunch break facilitating an obstacle course for the junior classes and a soccer league for the senior classes.
Children were excited to use iPads in the classroom for literacy and numeracy this afternoon. They worked really well with the 5th class helpers.
Seniors and first class were saying goodbye and good luck to Emmanuel and Junior today as they are moving to a new school. A group hug was appropriate for the occasion! 😊
All the children in the school have been exploring the Procedural Writing genre this month. Procedural writing instructs someone on how to do something. It is important to keep your instructions short, simple and to the point. 3rd and 4th Class have enjoyed writing recipes, instructions for playing games and instructions for decorating a Christmas tree. They are looking forward to a special procedural writing lesson coming up......How to Blow a Bubble!!! Keep an eye on the website to see how we get on. Check out the fantastic artwork the 3rd and 4th Class children did last week. We followed a youtube tutorial in a directed drawing lesson to create these adorable minions. If you want to give it a go follow this link www.youtube.com/watch?v=IA57RVnrij4 Last week Kilkishen N.S. celebrated special achievements from 5th and 6th class and 1st and 2nd class. Daniel Burke recieved a gold medal from the creators of Mangahigh for his efforts during the Mangahigh challenge during Maths week in October. Cathal McNamara and Darragh Moroney were joint runners up in the challenge. Congratulations to Dylan and John also on their word recognition work in 1st and 2nd class. Keep up the great work in numeracy and literacy! Well done to all. On Friday 25th November, myself (Miss Fawl) and 4 Green Schools committee members, Zara, Martin, Charleigh and Elyse, attended a water seminar. It was held in the West County Hotel and we had a great day. We got lots of ideas for our Action Plan and learned about the water cycle. A model school presented all the work that they did in order to get a green flag in this theme and their work will inspire us going forward. The children also had fun designing their perfect water school and then presenting this to the other school groups. Perhaps their favourite part (and mine!) was the yummy treats provided by the hotel. We are even more excited to work on the theme of water now and we are still keeping our fingers crossed that we will be chosen to take part in the One Good Idea project. This week's "Pupils of the Week" were selected from pupils that earned a star on their Principal Star Chart in all classes. Pupils that tried their best, completed their homework and showed respect this week earned a chance to win "Pupil of The Week". Congratulations to all our winners and best of luck to everyone again next week. skinless pollock 750g, cut into large cubes flour 3 tbsp oil Thai red curry paste 2 tbsp palm sugar or light brown soft sugar 1 tbsp coconut cream 160ml milk 100ml fish sauce 2 tsp green peppercorns or in brine and lightly crushed Thai basil or coriander a small handful jasmine rice to serve limes 2, halved METHOD Step 1 Put the pollock in a bowl, add the flour and turn the pieces over until they are coated. Heat 1cm oil in a frying pan until it is hot and fry the fish in a single layer for about a minute on each side, turning them as they brown. They should be cooked through. Lift them into a sieve to drain. Step 2 Put the curry paste in a saucepan with a little oil and fry it until it starts to bubble. Add the sugar for a minute, then stir in the coconut cream and milk, and bring the lot to a simmer. Add the fish sauce, peppercorns and pollock, and scatter in the Thai basil. Serve with rice and limes. This year our Kilkishen National school is hoping to obtain an active flag. As you know the school participates in numerous different sporting activities. To consolidate this we have set up an active school committee. This committee gives students from all class levels an opportunity to give us ideas in how the school can become more active and healthy. The school already has signed up to the super troopers programme which ensures that the students are getting active as part of their homework.
The active committee has come up with some fantastic ideas which include, Obstacle course Wednesday, Lunchtime soccer leagues and my personal favourite a Santa hat run for all classes. Also the committee will provide healthy meal recipes for parents to follow this healthy eating will give students the energy needed to pursue an active lifestyle. The students of 1st and 2nd class had great fun making winter themed penguins. They enjoyed painting cutting and designing their penguins. The students of 1st and 2nd class learned all about Thanksgiving today. They enjoyed learning about the Mayflower and Plymouth rock. Of course they absolutely loved watching highlights of the Macy's thanksgiving parade in New York. We also discussed reasons to be thankful and why we should appreciate all that we have. The Junior Infants had great fun carrying out the Dancing Raisin experiment last week, as part of Science Week. We saw how the bubbles in soda water can surround a raisin and carry it to the top of a glass. When the bubbles burst, the raisin drops back down. First, we carried out the experiment using flat soda water - teacher opened it the night before at home to check if the experiment worked - it didn't the next day in school when the fizz was gone!!! Not to worry, a quick spin to the shop for a fresh bottle did the trick!!!
Then, on Thursday, the junior infants visited the Science Fair the older classes were holding in the school. We saw lots of experiments and listened to the lovely children who explained their experiments wonderfully. All in all, it was a great Science Week!! The Junior Infant class had a wonderful party day before the mid-term break. Along with the rest of the children in the school, they dressed up for Halloween and took part in the Halloween Parade which took place outside after 11am break. It was a lovely day and the children very much enjoyed dressing up, a great practice run for Halloween night!!
The children in 3rd and 4th Class loved taking part in the Intel Mini Scientist competition. They prepared fantastic projects and they spoke with confidence in front of the judges. Thank you to Miss O'Donnell for helping the children with their projects. Check out Class Dojo for more pictures and videos from the day. Congratulations to the winning projects at today's Intel Mini Scientist School Fair. After much deliberation and discussion between the 5 Intel Judges, they announced that "How a Potato Charges a Light Bulb?" project was the runner-up entry and that the project "Will the Egg Crack?" was the winning entry. Well done to Darragh, Chelsea, Adrian and Aidan who will now qualify for the regional final held in Shannon in December. A very big thank you to Marie O'Donnell, student teacher in the school, that has coordinated the pupils projects and supported the pupils with their entries. The Intel Mini Scientist Exhibition is a competition for Primary school students in which they develop science related projects which are exhibited at fairs within their own schools. Winning projects selected at this school level exhibition then go on to take part in the Mini Scientist Regional Final event with the possibility of continuing on to the Grand Final event. The competition supports the Primary Science curriculum and is a great way to encourage enthusiasm and practical learning in the area of science. Intel Judges expressed their gratitude and commented on the great projects they witnessed today. |
