Well done to all the children who participated in the dress-up parade on Friday! The catwalk allowed all the children to show off their amazing costumes! Thanks to Laura for the marvellous face-painting. Children also enjoyed show and tell and Halloween games such as estimating how many treats are in the treat box and 'pin the spider on the web'. Well done to Amy Neville for guessing the correct amount of sweets in the Halloween treat box- She guessed 83 treats altogether! Children also had fun clearing the classroom for a taste of yoga with Jamie from Cosmic Kids. This week's "Pupils of the Week" were selected from pupils that earned a star on their Principal Star Chart in all classes. Pupils that tried their best, completed their homework and showed respect this week earned a chance to win "Pupil of The Week". Pupils that have earned 6 stars on their chart have won a "Homework Off" pass to use any night of their choosing. Congratulations to all our winners and best of luck to everyone again next week. 5th and 6th class pupils made Halloween Pumpkins from papier mache this week in preparation for Halloween. The pumpkins came in very handy for our fancy dress parade and marked out a catwalk for our pupils to display their costumes. Pupils designed and decorated their own unique pumpkins and they turned out very well! Congratulations to Clara and Eadoin on their recent recognition for their project entries with Clare Community Games. Both pupils received All-Star awards at a gala dinner in the West County Hotel last Friday and everyone at Kilkishen N.S. is very proud of their achievements.
On Friday pupils took part in a Halloween fancy dress parade as a fundraiser for additional Accelerated Reader books. There was great effort put into costumes for the day and pupils really enjoyed the occasion. Thank you to everyone that came on the day and to Laura Woods for face painting with many of the children. Well done to all the pupils. Kilkishen girls were crowned U/13 champions after a hard fought victory over ClooneyQuin last week. Current and past pupils from Kilkishen N.S. were represented on the team. Captain Roisín McNamara and past pupil Chloe Philpott visited the school with the shield on Thursday last. Congratulations to all the girls involved. The boys and girls in 3rd and 4th Class had a wonderful day at the Gaelic Football Blitz yesterday. It took place in Wolfe Tones na Sionna GAA grounds and over 200 children were present. It was wonderfully organised by Peter Casey and everything went off like clockwork. The emphasis was on children enjoying themselves and taking part regardless of whether they played Gaelic football for a club or had never played it before. We would like to sincerely thank Peter for organising this fantastic event and we look forward to the next one. The boys and girls in 1st and 2nd class have enjoyed making Halloween art. The students are eagerly looking forward to dressing up on Friday. The Green Schools Committee will be getting Kilkishen NS involved in the One Good Idea project this year. They will need to think of One Good Idea, with the help of the other children in the school, to encourage people to save energy and tackle climate change. They must come up with exciting and creative ways to get their idea across. They will put together a Campaign Proposal and the top 20 teams, from those that enter, will go through to stage 2, which involves running an awareness campaign to inspire others. They are hoping to attract attention and leave a lasting message with their idea.
To learn more about this project check out the website http://www.seai.ie/Schools/One-Good-Idea/ Seniors and First Class enjoyed maths fun and games inside the classroom and outside of the classroom this week! The class learned about weight using the maths language of 'heavy' and 'light' when comparing items. The class participated in various experiments to do with weight. The pupils particularly liked working as a class group to complete a Maths Trail around the school environment. Pupils are getting ready for Halloween and creating Halloween pumpkins in 5th and 6th class. Have a look at pupils painting their papier mache pumpkins below. Next week pupils will decorate and personalize their creations! Pupils from Junior Infants are helping to keep our school a litter free zone. Our junior litter wardens are doing a great job. Thank you to all the junior pupils for helping to keep Kilkishen N.S. clean.

The Green Schools Committee is up and running again with both old and new members. We are very excited to get to work on the next theme. Over the course of two years, we will be aiming to inform and guide the successful implementation of the Green Schools programme in relation to water. Simple steps and tips can lead to large reductions in water consumption both in the school and at home. We are hoping to help by developing awareness around water conservation and by teaching people about the effective management of this important resource. Learn more about the Green Schools Programme by visiting their website greenschoolsireland.org/ The Green Schools Committee will keep you all updated on their hard work by posting pictures and by sharing the minutes from our meetings on the school website. As always, Mike is so willing to give his time to this programme and we can't thank him enough for his continued involvement and support. We couldn't do it without him.
3rd and 4th Class loved their 'Plants All Around Me' lesson with Miss O'Donnell today. They were learning about the different parts of the flower and the functions of each part. They also discussed photosynthesis and the importance of bees. Then came the really fun part....the children went on a nature trail and searched the school yard for flowering and non-flowering plants which they first identified and then classified into groups. To conclude, each pupil was given the opportunity to grow their own plant! They are hoping their cress seeds will grow over the next couple of days. Check out some of the other fun and educational lessons the children have been experiencing with Miss O'Donnell over on our class page.

What a wonderful tour we had today! The children in the infant class were so excited this morning and the Fire Station and Garda Station did not disappoint!! Billy and Nora in the Fire Station gave us the most fabulous tour - they showed us all around the Station, explained about the equipment they use & made sure to give every child the opportunity to use the fire hose and sit inside the fire engine, where the fire fighters sit. The children learned lots and it was also great fun! Then Claire, our bus driver, drove us to the Garda Station, where we had another lovely tour guide - Garda Deirdre - showing us around. We saw the interview room, holding cell, Doctor's room, fingerprinting area, surveillance room, Garda car (and sirens!!), handcuffs......... the list goes on!! We met the Garda who was answering the 999 calls today. It was so interesting............. the children were mesmerised with it all! (and so were the adults!!) Then, we got back on the bus for our trip home............. we arrived back at the school gate just in time for our parents to collect at 2pm. The children were excellently behaved all day - they certainly deserve the goodie bags that were given to us at the Fire and Garda Stations. We will have a lovely time over the next few days talking about what we saw and heard on our tour today. A memorable day for all!! |
