The children in each of our classes enjoyed participating in an Energy and Sustainability Workshop facilitated by Áine Ní Fhlatharta. They engaged very well in these workshops and these topics were explored in a fun and interactive way.
The children in 1st, 2nd and 3rd class began by watching a short video from the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) which explained 'The Story of Energy'. Newtons Cradle was explored and we learned about the laws of motion. Then bouncing balls were used to show the conversion of kinetic energy to sound, heat and vibration. Next potato batteries were created to investigate the conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy - resulting in tiny light bulb lighting up. This was followed up with a short quiz which challenged the children to use what they learned to answer questions in groups. The final experiment involved using a vitamin c tablet and mixing with water. This created carbon dioxide gas and resulted in a plastic lid popping into the air. Please see below some of the activities that the boys and girls from 1st to 3rd thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to Áine for sharing her knowledge. Comments are closed.
